Fireplaces and wood stoves are a beautiful addition to any home, providing warmth and a cozy ambiance. However, they also produce ash, which needs regular cleaning to maintain a safe and efficient burning environment. Enter the Ash Vacuum—a specialized tool designed specifically for this purpose.
What are Ash Vacuum: Vacuum cleaners for fireplaces, stoves and grills
An ash vacuum cleaner makes it easy and safe to remove ash from wood-burning fireplaces, sauna stoves and grills. Each fireplace vacuum cleaner is equipped with a powerful turbine, an abundance of different attachments to make cleaning more convenient, and a reliable filter to ensure that no soot is released into the environment. Such a vacuum cleaner will help to cope not only with ash, but also with other dry debris that can not be collected by a conventional household vacuum cleaner – for example, sawdust, construction dust, dust in the garage.
Why Can’t I Use a Regular Vacuum?
While it may be tempting to use a regular vacuum cleaner, this is undesirable as some harmful substances can easily slip through the filters of a standard vacuum cleaner. This means that they can be released back into the air, leading to possible respiratory illnesses and mess in your home.
- Fire Hazard: Even if you believe the ashes are cold, there might be some hot embers lurking within. A regular vacuum isn’t designed to handle these, and introducing hot embers to a standard vacuum can lead to a fire.
- Durability: Ash is abrasive. Regularly using a standard vacuum to clean ash can wear out its internal components faster than usual, reducing its lifespan.
- Clogging: The fine nature of ash can quickly clog the filters and hoses of a regular vacuum, reducing its efficiency and potentially damaging the machine.
There are many models of vacuum cleaners for ash. We’ll take a closer look at the most popular model (based on customer ratings on Amazon):

I am shocked that a few reviewers have suggested using an ordinary shop vac instead of an ash vac. BAD IDEA.
Do Not Do This: My wood stove had sat for a few days and was stone cold. I looked inside and the ash and charcoal were cold. So why not use my shop vac? It seemed like a good idea.
Well, the rush of air into the hose is quite good at igniting seemingly cold charcoal. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a piece of charcoal ignite and flick into the hose. I dove for the off switch, but not nearly fast enough. In a microsecond a huge column of black smoke shot out of the vacuum. Running for the yard with a flaming shop vac in my arms is a thrill that I could have done without! After dowsing the fire with the garden hose, I discovered that the air filter and other plastic parts in a shop vac are most definitely flammable! Sadder, but wiser, I bought a cheap ash vac with a steel lined hose and a fiberglass filter. It worked fine until the filter wore out. Of course, it had been discontinued and there are no replacement parts.
It is summer and I have yet to use the PowerSmith, but Amazon stocks the replacement fiberglass filters at a reasonable price. I would give it 5 stars, but the motor runs somewhat hot and the fill indicator is useless. The 10′ hose is great, and it has very good suction.

After nearly burning down the house twice work disposing of embers too soon, I’m thrilled to have chosen this vac. It doesn’t feel cheap. I stuck the tip right in the bucket of ashes and it sucked a hole right to the bottom. I wasn’t expecting an ash vac to be as inexpensive as it was. All in all, very satisfied.

“Solid ash vacuum. Does what it’s supposed to do. My only gripe is the hose length. I wish it was a bit longer for those hard-to-reach spots in my fireplace. Otherwise, a good purchase.”
